Description:
Small to medium sized tree, usually only 10-20ft high.

Native Range:
The origin of the citron is unknown, but it was the first cultivated citrus fruit, with records dating back to 4000 B.C. It was a common fruit in the Mediterranean region, and today is cultivated primarily in Sicily, Corsica, and Crete, Greece, Israel, as well as a number of Central and South American countries. Fruits have been known to cost $10-$50 a pound in the United States, sold for religious purposes.

When the fruit are blanched slightly in boiling water, and dried under the sun, they are called hong zao 紅棗 (red jujube). When the fruit are blanched in boiling water and baked until the skin become black and shinny, they are call da zao 大棗 (large jujube).

2) Introduction of the dried red dates:
According to historical statistics, the red date is a special species with a long tradition and a high reputation in its birthplace China. As early as the Western Zhou Dynasty, fermented red dates were used to make red date wine, which was served as a tribute or used to treat guests and friends. In the remote antiquity, people had found that red dates could supplement nutrition and improve health conditions. Han Feizi recorded how the Qin State used red dates and chestnuts to relieve famines. That explains why the folks have been regarded the red date as one of the major crops.

Xinjiang has the typical dry climate in temperate zone, with sufficient sunshine (over 2,600 hours every year), high accumulate temperature (over 4,000°C as active accumulated temperature above 10°C), low precipitation (average annual natural precipitation of 155mm), large vaporization (over 2,400mm every year), dry climate, long frost-free period and larg e temperature difference between day and night.
